Phone Numbers

Get a number for inbound and outbound calls.

5 min read

Every call needs a phone number — yours, so the caller sees who's calling (outbound) or knows what to dial (inbound). This page covers getting a number, setting it up, and avoiding the common pitfalls that hurt answer rates.

Before you start. Buying a number takes about 60 seconds. The harder part is registering it with carriers so your calls don't get labeled as spam — that takes 1-3 weeks but you only have to do it once. Plan accordingly.

You don't need a number for testing. Test calls work fine without buying a number. You'll only need one when you're ready to deploy on real callers.

Where to manage numbers

Settings → Phone numbers.

The page lists every number assigned to your account, with country, capabilities (voice / SMS), assigned Finn (if any), and monthly cost.

Buying a number

  1. Settings → Phone numbers → Buy Number.
  2. Select a country and area code (or "any").
  3. Filter by capability — voice only, or voice + SMS.
  4. Choose a number from the available list.
  5. Confirm. The number is provisioned within seconds and added to your inventory.

Pricing

  • Local numbers — varies by country. US local: $1/month. UK local: $1.50/month. India local: $3/month.
  • Toll-free numbers — typically 3-5x the local rate, but inbound calls are free for the caller.
  • Per-minute — telephony usage charged separately. See Billing →.

Country availability

Numbers are available in 60+ countries. Regulated countries (India, France, Germany, etc) may require KYC / business verification before provisioning. The buy flow walks you through any required uploads.

Bringing your own number (BYO)

If you already own a number through another provider (Twilio, Plivo, your PBX, etc), you can port it in or SIP-trunk it.

Porting

Real ownership transfer. You no longer pay your previous provider.

  1. Settings → Phone numbers → Port a Number.
  2. Provide the LOA (Letter of Authorization) and a recent bill from your current carrier.
  3. Submit. Porting takes 5-15 business days depending on country.

SIP trunking

Keep the number where it is; just route calls through FinnAI.

  1. Settings → Telephony Account → Add SIP Trunk.
  2. Provide your provider's SIP endpoint, credentials, and supported codecs.
  3. Configure inbound routing — which Finn should answer calls from which DID.

SIP trunking is best for enterprise customers with existing telephony investment.

Number capabilities

Each number has one or more capabilities:

CapabilityWhat it does
Voice (inbound)Receive calls to this number.
Voice (outbound)Make calls from this number as caller-ID.
SMSSend/receive SMS. Required for 2FA flows, fallback messaging.
MMSMultimedia. Less commonly needed.

Not every number supports every capability. The buy flow shows what's available per country / region.

Caller-ID registration (US/Canada)

In the US and Canada, outbound calls must comply with STIR/SHAKEN attestation, and high-volume numbers must be CNAM-registered to avoid spam labeling.

The platform handles attestation automatically. For CNAM and brand registration:

  1. Settings → Phone numbers → [Number] → Caller ID Registration.
  2. Submit your business name, EIN, and intended call volume.
  3. Carriers review (1-3 weeks). Once approved, your business name appears on caller ID.

Failing to register a high-volume number = your calls get labeled "SPAM LIKELY" and answer rates collapse. Always register.

Number pools

For parallel deployments, one number isn't enough — you can't legally or technically dial 5,000 simultaneous calls from a single DID. Use a pool.

  1. Settings → Phone numbers → Pools → Create Pool.
  2. Add 10+ numbers (rule of thumb: ~1 number per 50 concurrent calls).
  3. Assign the pool to a parallel deployment instead of a single from-number.
  4. The dispatcher round-robins outbound calls across the pool.

Pools also improve answer rates — recipients are less suspicious of seeing a single number ring them repeatedly.

Assigning numbers to Finns

Two-way assignment models:

Per-deployment (most flexible)

The deployment-launch screen picks the from-number. The same number can be used by many deployments. Best for outbound campaigns.

Per-number (inbound)

Settings → Phone numbers → [Number] → Default Inbound Finn. When this number rings, the chosen Finn answers automatically.

Useful for receptionist-style use cases where the number IS the brand and the Finn behind it rarely changes.

Routing rules

For inbound calls, you can route based on:

  • Time of day — business hours → live Finn, off-hours → voicemail or different Finn.
  • Caller ID — known VIP → premium Finn; unknown → general queue.
  • Dialed number — same Finn can serve multiple numbers, branching on which DID was dialed.

Configure under Settings → Phone numbers → [Number] → Routing.

Voicemail

If a call is sent to voicemail (either by the Finn or by the routing rule), you can:

  • Drop a recorded message — pre-recorded MP3.
  • Generate a TTS message — uses the Finn's voice for consistency.
  • Just hang up — silent voicemail. Useful when leaving a message would be spam.

Voicemail drops are logged in the call history but don't incur LLM cost.

Releasing a number

Settings → Phone numbers → [Number] → Release.

  • Released numbers leave your inventory immediately.
  • Monthly fees stop pro-rating from release date.
  • Released US/Canada numbers go through a 30-day quarantine before being reassigned.

⚠️ Released numbers can usually NOT be recovered. If a number is critical, port it to your personal carrier before releasing instead of releasing outright.

Troubleshooting

SymptomLikely cause
Outbound calls fail with "carrier rejected"From-number not registered for the destination country, or not STIR/SHAKEN attested.
Inbound calls go straight to voicemailNo Finn assigned, or business-hours routing rule active outside hours.
Calls connect with 5-10s of silenceSIP trunk codec mismatch; check your trunk config.
All US calls show as "Scam Likely"CNAM not registered. Submit registration.
Calls from one country fail; another country worksCountry-specific KYC needed. Check Settings → Phone numbers → [Number] → Compliance Status.
